The Introduction of College of Design

Everything starts with zero on the design axis. Pursuing various issues and standards of each design process, multiple clusters gradually came into shape. Each piece is refined independently to create infinite possibilities, depicting our vision of the bright future. [ percentum ] breaks the way of presenting individual pieces and analyzes their projections toward the future. We spread out the process, leading you into these diverse spacetimes of the pieces to experience the 24%, 120%, and 1460% of design.

Department of Fashion Design

Established in 1961, the Department of Fashion Design is the first higher education institution in Taiwan has a fashion design program for the purpose of cultivating professional skills with humanistic qualities and fashion design abilities. Through developing and adapting the quality of education, the department has built a unique, experimental and creative teaching system in order to achieve the aim of establish the relationship between design academic and fashion industry. To advance the national education level of fashion design, we established the Institute of Fashion Design in 1999 and began to provide an on-the-job graduate program in fashion design.

Department of Industrial Design

Department of Industrial Design was established in 1992. The goals for the under-graduate program are “Professionalism, Internationalization, and Industrialization,” whereas “the combination of theories and practices and the interdisciplinary studies across all fields” are set for the graduate programs. In September, 2009, Business Week Magazine reviewed the curricula of S.C.I.D. as one of the TOP 30 World’s Best Design Programs. The curricula designs are both concentrated on the learning and accumulation of design-related knowledge and the creativity generated through first-hand experiments and practices.We expect that each and every student will be able to develop his/her unique approach toward rationales, methods, and ability in the process of designing.

Department of Architecture

Shih Chien University's Architecture Department was officially established in 2002 after shedding its former name of Interior Space Design Department. Research Focus: architectural design, interior design,public art,community regeneration, exhibition design. The educational aim of the department's program aims to promote the fundamentals of the architectural praxis on the spirit of creative craftsmanship. The department encourages experimentation and cross-interdisciplinary research and explorations in a variety of media.

Tung-Min Memorial Building

The minimalist buildings of Shih Chien University (SCU) were completed using the emerging “exposed concrete surface method” that primarily leaves concrete structures unpainted and un-tiled after the casting mold is removed, to preserve the natural texture of the construction materials (bare concrete, exposed aggregate, steel, glass and metals) in a harmonious architectural fashion. The method, using bare concrete is as the main material, has been applied to the Tung-Min Memorial Hall that houses the College of Design, the revamped Library and Information Building, and the new Sport Center. Students from the Department of Fashion Design, an academic highlight of SCU, are able to freely present their works in multiple venues around the department building, such as the stairwells, bathrooms, or anywhere else they please, in pursuit of their creative vision.

College of Design

The design college consists of 4 departments, which includes 4 bachelor’s degree and 4 master’s degree programs. Department of Fashion Design｜ Department of Architecture Design｜ Department of Industrial Design｜ Department of Communications Design｜ The common objective of these studio-based programs is to educate students to have professional, inter-disciplinary, and innovative capabilities. The college participates extensively in international and domestic design competitions, exhibitions, and education-industry cooperative projects.

Department of Communications Design

Department of Communications Design was established in 1997 and renamed in 2000. It became the first department in Taiwan to be named after the “Communications Design”.The freshman students of the department are trained in a general design education course which is the foundation of Design. The sophomore course is divided into two majors : “Digital 3D Animation Design ” and “Creative Media Design”. Beside the technical training, we dedicate and emphasize the training of design thinking and humanistic aesthetic in general. Therefore in this digital generation, students will be able to appeal their talent in multiple digital areas such as designs, movies, games, interactive medias and any new artistic expression forms in this changing world. Not only to adapt the entertainment business environment but also to create new or their own ways of design business.
